KEARNEY – University of Nebraska at Kearney Police and Parking Services is participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The special enforcement grant allows for increased patrol for drunk driving Aug. 21 through Sept. 7.

“During the beginning of the school year we have so many students out and about, and it’s important that they’re safe,” said Jim Davis, director of Police and Parking Services. “We need to keep drunk drivers off the road for their safety.”

Labor Day weekend brings an increase in highway travel and drunk driving, so state and local law enforcement agencies across the nation are stepping up enforcement.

UNK Police and Parking Services regularly have two officers on duty in the evenings. The grant allows for two more officers to be on duty.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. In 2013, there were 10,076 people killed in these preventable crashes.
