Band Day Parade Competition winners announced

KEARNEY – Axtell High School won the Sweepstakes Trophy and was named the top band overall at Saturday’s 2013 UNK Band Day Parade Competition.

Twenty Nebraska bands marched in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Homecoming Parade and were later awarded trophies.

In Class AA competition, Kearney High School took first place and North Platte High School won second. Axtell’s drum line earned the Outstanding Drum Line trophy. Winning the Best Color Guard Trophy was Kearney Catholic.

Kearney High only competed in their class and wasn’t considered for outstanding drum line, color guard or sweepstakes awards.

In Class B competition, Holdrege won first place. In Class C competition, Kearney Catholic High School placed first, St. Paul placed second and Grand Island Central Catholic was third. In Class D competition, first place went to Axtell, second place went to Amherst and third place went to Kenesaw.

In the middle school division, first place went to the Kearney Eighth Grade Band, second place went to Ogallala Middle School and third place went to Holdrege Middle School.

Trophies for the event were donated by the Kearney Hub. Assisting with the awarding of the trophies was Hub Publisher Julie Speirs, along with UNK band directors Duane Bierman and Brian Alber.
