The African Student Association at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will host the SecondAnnual African Cultural Festival on Thursday, Feb. 7.

The festival, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room from 6-8 p.m.

There will be three dance performances, a fashion show and other activities to engage the audience.

“There will be opportunities for those who attend to win prizes as well as taste African foods,” said Etchean Assemian of Cote d’Ivoire, president of the UNK African Student Association. “Last year, we had about 400 guests attend, so we are hoping for more people this time around.”

“We decided to do this festival again, because it is a fun and great way to share all different aspects of the African culture with UNK students and the Kearney community in one night,” Assemian said. “Our organization is pretty new, and we felt as though we needed to be involved in campus life, and educate people about our background and culture.”

The African Cultural Festival is the opening ceremony for Black History Month. ASA members, along with the Black Student Association, have been planning events for the month of February.
