The String Winter Concert, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will feature selections from the Romantic era.
“The music presented in the String Winter Concert focuses on compositions written in the second half of the Romantic era,” said Dr. Ting-Lan Chen, associate professor of music and performing arts. “These works carry expressive melodic lines and rich, colorful harmonies that showcase the string instruments’ singing ability very well.”
The performance, which will take place in the UNK Fine Arts Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.
Among the featured performances will be the Thornton String Quartet. Membership in the quartet is by competitive audition. Each year, those selected receive a $3,000 scholarship, which is funded by a gift from a UNK alumnae. The quartet was established in the fall of 2004.
Members of the quartet include Erich Gebers of Lincoln, cello; Jennifer Zumwalt of Lincoln, violin; Eric Jensen of Bismarck, N.D., viola; and Cindie Reneau of Oklahoma City, Okla., violin.
“The String Winter Concert will also include selections of music by both well-known and rare-known composers such as Max Bruch, Maurice Ravel, Bedrich Smetana, J.B. Accolay, Erwin Schulhoff, Johan Svendsen, Hans Sitt and Carl Bohm,” Dr. Chen said.
Also performing in the String Winter Concert will be Gina Lieb of Kearney, violin; Megan Krueger of Kearney, violin; Natalie Hall of Norfolk, violin; Xiaojun Liu of China, violin; Dan Yu of China, piano; and Nancy Curry, staff accompanist.
