The seventh annual Big Event day of community service hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney is currently seeking job sites and volunteer participants.
Hundreds of UNK students, faculty and staff are expected participate in the effort to say “thanks” to the Kearney community for the support it gives the campus. The submission deadline for volunteers and prospective job-sites is Friday, March 2.
Those interested in volunteering, requesting assistance or offering a job-site for a non-profit organization, or for themselves, can contact The Big Event executive team for a project request form. For more information about The Big Event, or to volunteer or request assistance, individuals can email unkbigevent12@gmail.com, call Bradley Rediger at 402.641.7359 or visit www.unk.edu/thebigevent.
Last year, more than 500 students and faculty volunteered at more than 80 job sites. Volunteers will participate in service projects that benefit nonprofit organizations, churches and individuals in the Kearney area.
“Community service is a huge way to give back,” said Brandi McHarness of Axtell and member of The UNK Big Event committee.
Other members of The Big Event committee include Kyle Gibbens of Cozad, Brandon Drozd of Genoa, Nathan Holmes of Grand Island, Page Beiermann of Lincoln and Bradley Rediger of Milford.
The event will take place on Friday, March 31, and will begin that day with a 9:30 a.m. gathering at Foster Field. Participants will receive a free t-shirt to be worn that day.
The Big Event is one of the largest student-run community service efforts in the nation and is an annual event at more than 70 universities.
