Bob Phares, a member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, will give the winter commencement address to 386 graduates in 10 a.m. ceremonies Friday (Dec. 16) at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Health and Sports Center.
Phares, who graduated with honors from UNK in 1962, is president and owner of Phares Financial Services, Inc., a financial planning and services firm in North Platte. He was first elected mayor of North Platte at the age of 28, which at that time made him the youngest person ever elected to run a Nebraska city of the first classification. He served two terms as mayor. He was first elected to the Board of Regents in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. In 2009, he was elected vice chairman of the board, and in 2010, was elected chair.
In 1984, he received two major awards from the UNK campus — the Distinguished Service Award and the Outstanding Alumni Award. He is a former member of the University of Nebraska President’s Advisory Council, a former board president of the Kearney State College Foundation, past member of the Mid-Plains Community College Foundation, and served as a public representative on the NU presidential search committee.
In addition, he is a past president of the League of Nebraska Municipalities and former board chairman of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce. He is the former director of the North Platte Development Corporation, NEBRASKAland Days, Inc., and the North Platte United Way Fund. For more than 20 years, he has been involved with the Great Plains Regional Medical Center, eight years as chair of the board of directors. He is a past president of the North Platte Rotary Club, serving as the district governor from 1996 to 1997.
The Friday ceremonies will open with the National Anthem, performed by Shawna Beeler ofWoodland Park, Colo., accompanied by Michelle Fritz of Holdrege. Both Beeler and Fritz are graduating seniors. Danielle Jean Larson, a political science major from Tilden, will present Senior Class Reflections. Jordan Gonzales, student regent and student body president from Morrill, will give greetings.
UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen will give the welcome and will present the Leland Holdt/Security Mutual Life Distinguished Faculty Award.
Of the 386 graduates, 269 will receive undergraduate degrees, and 117 will receive graduate degrees.
