Brenda Jochum
Department of Industrial Technology internship director, 308.865.8122
Nearly 80 University of Nebraska at Kearney industrial technology students are spending their summer interning with companies throughout the nation.
Students are interning in 16 states ranging from Washington to Florida. All but one of the students are being paid for their 12-week internships, with salaries ranging from $8.50 – $28.50 per hour.
“Ninety percent of interns consider their internship company for future employment, and 50 percent return to their internship company for full-time employment after graduation,” said Brenda Jochum, internship director for the UNK Department of Industrial Technology.
Students apply for the internships using contacts made through the program career fairs, company showcases, faculty and internship director connections, and their own network of contacts.
“Industrial distribution and construction management career fairs, which bring companies to UNK from across the country, were instrumental in securing positions,” Jochum said. “In tough economic times, we diligently work to make new connections and follow-up with our network of industry professionals.”
A summer internship is required after a student’s junior year in the three industrial technology programs – construction management, industrial distribution and telecommunications management. The internship requirements are based on the student’s area of study, and must provide diverse experience that complements the degree program objectives and a learning environment where professionals are willing to mentor students.
“The primary purpose of an internship is to gain practical experience and network with knowledgeable professionals,” Jochum said. “While doing so, interns learn about themselves and the industry.”
