UNK– Jody Ziola, a senior music education major from Archer, will perform on the tuba during her Senior Recital at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Saturday (Oct. 30).

The recital, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall, located in the UNK Fine Arts Building. Ziola’s recital will feature the works of Grant, Gregson, Marcello and York.

“I learned to play the tuba after my band director said someone told him that girls couldn’t play the tuba,” Ziola said. “I had to prove them wrong ,so I took it home and learned it over the summer, and fell in love. That was about 13 years ago.” As well as playing the tuba, Ziola sings and plays the bassoon, baritone, trumpet and percussion.

“As a music education major, I am not required to give a recital,” Ziola said. “This recital is something that I am doing for myself.  It has been a big project, but I am really excited with how far I have come.”

Ziola studies with Dr. Seth Fletcher, UNK low brass lecturer, and will be accompanied on the piano by Nancy Curry and Clint Dennis.

Ziola, the daughter of Lee and Deb Neel, is a Deans’ List student, president of the High Plains Chapter of the International Tuba-Euphonium Association and a Joel Holbrooke Award recipient.
