Junior Recital at UNK Features Program of Original Compositions by DeAnn Sindt of Upland

DeAnn Sindt
UNK music composition major, 308.627.3989.

UNK– A junior recital Sunday (Oct. 10) afternoon at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will feature a program of original compositions by DeAnn Sindt.

Sindt, a senior music composition major from Upland, will also perform some of the selections. The recital will begin at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall, which is located in the UNK Fine Arts Building. In all, seven of Sindt’s compositions will be performed, including “Indigo,” “Come,” “Summer in Venice,” “High Five,” “Jazz InterpRetation,” “Printemps” and “Jesus, Come.” The compositions will be performed by various small groups and soloists.

“I am surprised at the willingness of some students to play my pieces,” Sindt said. “I take it that they enjoy the pieces, and that they enjoy playing a piece that has never been performed before. It gives me pleasure to see someone excited to play a piece, and it’s good that they support the art of composing and songwriting, as well as those who do it.”

Sindt began playing the piano and composing music at a young age. Throughout her musical career she has played several instruments, including the euphonium, trombone, French horn, trumpet, saxophone and clarinet. At UNK, Sindt is a student of Dr. Darleen Mitchell, UNK music and performing arts/composition professor. Dr. Mitchell will also be performing in the recital.

Sindt is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society. She is the recipient of a music scholarship, transfer scholarship and the study abroad for MAUI (Mid-America Universities International) exchange program. In January 2011, Sindt will travel abroad to study music at the University College of Cork in Cork, Ireland. Her studies in Ireland will focus on the tin whistle and the bodhran, an Irish drum.

“I chose to study abroad in Ireland, because it’s an English speaking country, and I would be able to take more advanced classes in my major as opposed to (studying in) a non-English speaking country where language would be a barrier,” Sindt said.

Sindt is the daughter of Harold and Dixie Sindt of Upland.
