More than 2,000 band members in 30 Class A, B, C and D bands from across the state will take to the field for the 24th Annual Nebraska State Bandmaster Association Marching Contest Saturday, Oct. 21, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

“The NSBA Contest is the largest marching band contest in the state and promises to be a colorful and exciting event,” said Dr. Neal Schnoor, UNK associate professor of music and performing arts. The competition is being hosted by UNK and the UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band, which Dr. Schnoor directs.

While the 30 Class A, B, C and D bands compete at Cope Stadium on the UNK campus, there will be 30 AA bands competing at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.

“Eight expert judges from across the United States will adjudicate each band performance taking place at UNK that day,” Dr. Schnoor said.

Judges for the competition at UNK will include: Jeff Storey, Overland Park, Kan.; Rick Shaw, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Dave Haugen, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Dale Gunderson, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Marty McDonald, Waukee, Iowa; Dick Redman, Pella, Iowa; Richard Dufault, Waseca, Minn.; and Todd Blaser, Alexandria, Minn.

The judges will rate the bands in the following categories: music performance ensemble, music performance individual, music performance general effect, visual performance ensemble, visual performance individual, visual general effect, colorguard and percussion. Based on points earned in each of the categories, bands will be rated on a scale of one to four, with a one being Superior; two, Excellent; three, Good; and four, Fair.
