University of Nebraska at Kearney Jazz Rock Ensemble director Dr. James Payne will be the featured soloist with the ensemble when they are in concert Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the UNK Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Dr. Payne will play a trumpet solo written for Harry “Sweets” Edison. Edison played trumpet in a swing style from the 1930s to the 1990s. In addition, student soloists will be featured on piano, guitar, alto and tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone and drums. Throughout the evening, the emphasis will be on music written in the last 10 years.

The ensemble will perform jazz pieces styled in several types of swing, Latin rock, rock shuffle, contemporary jazz, jazz hip hop, ballad and funk. The selections were chosen from the libraries of Jeff Jarvis, Roger Fox Big Band, Army Jazz Ambassadors, Dallas Jazz Orchestra, John Fedchock Big Band, Stan Kenton Orchestra, Les Hooper’s Grand Band, Frank Mantooth, Dave Weckl and Sammy Nestico.

“The UNK Jazz Rock Ensemble brings together UNK students from Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming and Japan to play great music from the best big bands and big band writers in the nation,” Dr. Payne said. The concert is free and open to the public.
