A group of University of Nebraska at Kearney students will use their spring break, March 11-19, to work with other volunteers to help with reconstruction efforts in Baton Rouge, La.

The alternative spring break is being sponsored jointly by the UNK Office of Service Learning, and Residential and Greek Life.

“Students will help with the reconstruction of buildings and assist in the distribution of supplies,” said Chris Silva, UNK Greek assistant in the Office of Residential and Greek Life. “They will leave directly from the UNK campus.

“The project will provide an excellent opportunity for students to see the effects of a natural disaster and learn about emergency response, as well as simply enjoy visiting Louisiana,” Silva said. “As part of the trip, students will reflect on the trip with each other, and after returning, will share their experiences here on campus.”

The trip is open to all UNK students; applications and other information can be obtained Silva at silvac1@unk.edu or by calling Silva at (308) 865-8156.

Trip expenses are not expected to exceed $200 per student, which includes a $50 deposit. Housing and a portion of the meals will be provided by the local Louisiana recovery groups. The deadline for application is Dec. 16.

Seats are limited, so early application is encouraged, Silva said.
