The Greek Man and Woman of the Year were announced at the annual Greek Week Awards Night held earlier this week at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
According to Cami Wacker, associate director for Student Development and Retention Programs, Greek Man and Woman of the Year are selected based on their leadership within the fraternity and sorority community, campus involvement, scholarship, service and a personal interview.
Mike Wilken of Cook was selected as Greek Man of the Year. Mike, a junior criminal justice major, is president of the Interfraternity Council and Order of Omega. He has served his fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma, as chapter president, recruitment chair, new member educator and vice president of membership. In addition, he is a member of the Honors Program, GAMMA, Tau Mu Sigma honor society and a justice on the Student Court.
His philanthropic contributions include Buddy Bowling, Recreation Aid at YRTC, Baby-sit for Books and teeter-totter-a-thon. Personal honors include Kendall Weyers Memorial Scholarship, chair of the Ritual Committee for the national conclave of Sigma Tau Gamma, Outstanding Associate Member of 2002 and Outstanding Associate Member GPA for 2002.
“Mike has very high standards for himself and others,” Wacker said. “His commitment to living his life with integrity make him truly worthy of this award.”
Katie Frost of Grand Island was selected as Greek Woman of the Year. A senior majoring in chemistry, Katie has served Alpha Phi social sorority as president, vice president of program development and director of philanthropy. Within the Greek community she has served on the Greek Steering Committee and the Panhellenic Recruitment Crew.
In addition, she has been a member of Chancellor’s Ambassadors, Diplomats, the Honors Program, Resident Advisers, Mortar Board, LPAC, Family Day chair, Fun5K chair, Summer Advising and Enrollment Staff, Chemistry Club, Gold Torch and much more.
Her community service contributions include Alpha Phi/Texas Children’s Hospital Spring Break, KidzExplore, Nursing Home Cleanup, Honey Sunday and Relay for Life. Her personal honors include seven semesters on the Deans’ List, Chancellor’s Scholarship, Shirley Walker Scholarship, Lori J. Prauner Scholarship, Nester Student Leadership Award and 2005 Student Alumni Foundation Outstanding Senior Award.
“Katie has demonstrated excellence throughout her tenure at UNK,” Wacker said. “She is an outstanding example of a student who has maximized her college experience, taking advantage of all UNK has to offer.”
