A one-day seminar on “Effective Communication Skills” will be offered Wednesday, October 3, at College Park in Grand Island. The seminar is one in a series being offered through the Learning Edge which is a University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Division of Continuing Education program.

“Effective speaking is crucial to personal and professional success,” said Dr. William Jurma, seminar presenter. “To succeed, you must be able to get your point across, whether it be on the telephone, in meetings, person-to-person or in front of a group. It’s an especially valuable skill when dealing with difficult people.”

Participants will learn how to achieve the results they desire through the use of effective message construction, along with the appropriate verbal and nonverbal skills for their target audience.

Dr. Jurma, a communications professor and the associate dean for the UNK College of Fine Arts and Humanities, has done consulting for Nations Bank, Tandy, Dawson Public Power District, Heritage Bank, Chief Industries and Pier 1 Imports. He was formerly on faculty at Texas Christian University.

The seminar, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost of the seminar, including lunch, is $99 if registered by the September 26 deadline. After September 26, the fee is $109. Participants may pay by purchase order, credit card or check. Checks should be made payable to UNK and mailed to: Division of Continuing Education, Communications Center, Kearney, NE 68849.
