Dr. Kathleen J. Smith, current chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, has been named the new Dean of the College of Business and Technology at UNK. Smith’s appointment becomes effective July 1, pending the approval of the Board of Regents at their June meeting. Dr. Galen Hadley announced his resignation from the post in November 2000. Hadley will assume the position of professor of accounting.
“Her talents and energy, and her broad and successful backgroud in teaching, research, and scholarship will serve the University and the College of Business and Technology exceedingly well as we build on this institution’s reputation for excellence,” said UNK Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston.
Smith joined the faculty of Kearney State College in 1989 as an associate professor and has served as professor and chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance since 1992. Prior to coming to UNK, Smith served as assistant professor of business at the University of South Dakota, in Vermillion, S.D., from 1982 to 1988.
Smith holds the Juris Doctorate and Master of Professional Accountancy degrees from the University of South Dakota and an LL.M. in Taxation from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific.
“Kathy Smith brings to this post a distinguished record of academic preparation, excellence in teaching and scholarship, and professional accomplishment and leadership,” said the Chancellor.
Smith is also the author of numerous publications and papers. She received the “Outstanding Accounting Educator in Nebraska” award in 1999. She has served on the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy since 1994. She served as chair of the Nebraska State Board of Public Accountancy from 1998-99.
