University of Nebraska Regent Kent Schroeder is slated to deliver the spring commencement address to 593 University of Nebraska at Kearney graduates at 10 a.m. Friday, May 4, in the UNK Health and Sports Center.
Schroeder, a University of Nebraska College of Law graduate, has represented the sixth district as a regent for nearly a decade. He was elected to the Board of Regents in 1998, re-elected in 2005, and has served as vice-chair and chair of the board.
Before being elected regent, he held numerous leadership positions in the Kearney community, including serving on the boards for Good Samaritan Health Systems, Sentinel Health Care, Kearney Chamber of Commerce, Kearney Country Club, Central Community College and the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys. In addition, he has served on the Kearney City Council and Kearney School Board, both elected positions.
Further, Schroeder is a pilot and holds the rank of captain in the Nebraska Air National Guard.
After the processional and singing of the national anthem, UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen will deliver the welcome address, which will be followed by greetings from University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken. Larry Edwards, UNK Alumni Association president, will extend a welcome on behalf of UNK alumni.
A Kearney couple, Ed and Betty Cook, will receive special recognition during ceremonies. The two will be presented the Distinguished Service Award by UNK Chancellor Kristensen.
Performing the National Anthem will be Mai Shibahara, a senior music and performing arts major from Japan. Dr. Neal Schnoor will direct the UNK Wind Ensemble in performing special music for the occasion.
Takeshi Morisato, a senior philosophy major from Japan, will deliver Senior Class Reflections.
