UNK’s Black Student Association, Upsilon Eta Upsilon – Honor Society for Black Excellence and African Student Union hosted the first of several Black History Month events, Junkanoo, on Monday night at the Nebraskan Student Union.

Junkanoo is a Bahamian cultural celebration that includes dance, music and spirituality. Originated during the period of chattel slavery, it’s a celebration of life and freedom. The UNK event featured a dance, photo station and games.

Upcoming Black History Month events include:

  • Trap Karaoke – 7 p.m. Tuesday at the NSU food court. Trap is a sub-genre of hip-hop music that originated in the South.
  • Frozen in History – 7 p.m. Wednesday at the NSU Antelope Room. Students will celebrate historical Black figures and share information about their contributions to American and worldwide society. A faculty panel will follow.
  • African Marketplace – 7 p.m. Thursday at the NSU food court. Craft bracelets, waistbands, necklaces or anklets out of African beads. Henna and henna tattoos also will be available.
  • My Black Hero Exhibit – All week in the NSU atrium.
