The Museum of Nebraska Art is pleased to announce that UNK Chancellor Douglas A. Kristensen is the honorary chair for MONA’s 2002 Membership campaign. “MONA is unique,” says Chancellor Kristensen, “because its collection is focused specifically on the visual arts heritage of our state. But MONA is more than a state art collection, it is a living, breathing laboratory for the appreciation of the arts.”
MONA plays host to thousands of visitors including area school children and university students each year who come to see the work of artists of local, national and international acclaim. The collection covers 175 years of art in Nebraska. Visitors can see the work of the earliest artist/explorers including George Catlin’s observations of Native American life. Thomas Hart Benton’s original illustrations for Francis Parkman’s The Oregon Trail are also part of the permanent collection. Visitors enjoy paintings by early 20th Century American master and Cozad native, Robert Henri, as well as up-to-the-minute contemporary work by Nebraska artists. The artwork on display is inspired by the artists’ experience of Nebraska or created by artists from the state.
“By becoming a member, you will help ensure that the Museum of Nebraska Art will continue to flourish as a community artistic treasure,” says Chancellor Kristensen, “and will continue to provide a great learning environment for area school and university students.”
MONA is a hub of cultural activity, hosting a variety of constantly changing exhibitions of historical and contemporary art, educational field trips and workshops, in-gallery lectures, concerts and other cultural events. Funds generated through memberships help support these activities. “The best way to experience everything MONA has to offer is through membership,” says Mark Foradori, MONA’s Director of Development, “and you can afford to visit often because admission is free. Memberships help keep it that way.”
The University of Nebraska Kearney works in partnership with the Museum to support basic operations, but the majority of financial support comes from contributions. For information on becoming a MONA member, call the Museum of Nebraska Art at 308.865.8559.
