NU PATHS: PRE-ADMISSION TO THE HEALTH SCIENCES

Last fall, the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center started a new cooperative program called NU PATHS to recruit multicultural and minority students into health care professions.

“The program gives the students who are selected a full tuition scholarship at UNK, and it then guarantees them acceptance into one of the health programs at UNMC once they have completed the pre-professional curriculum here,” said Peggy Abels, program coordinator for UNK.

Last spring the first two students were accepted into the NU PATHS program. Jose Guerrero of Grand Island was accepted for the Pharmacy Program, and Joseph Chiweshe of Lincoln was accepted for the Medical School Program.

Applications for the program will be accepted from underrepresented minorities, which include Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanic Americans, who are in their senior year of high school or are current undergraduates at UNK. The application includes written essays, high school and/or college transcripts, three letters of recommendation and standardized test (ACT or SAT) scores. The application deadline is Jan. 15.

ADD ONE – NU PATHS
All high school applicants must have achieved a composite ACT score of at least 22 or a composite SAT score of 1010. All UNK undergraduate applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 from the freshman year. During the subsequent years, the students must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA, and a 3.25 math and science GPA. Students applying to the College of Medicine must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and a 3.25 math and science GPA.
