Chief Richard Picciotto, the highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse and author of the New York Times Best-Seller Last Man Down, will share the detailed accounts of his survival in a presentation at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on September 16. Chief Picciotto will speak at 7:00 p.m. in the UNK Health and Sports Center, followed immediately by a book signing.
Richard Picciotto, also known as “Pitch,” became chief in 1992 and a year later assisted in the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing. Chief Picciotto is a 28-year veteran of the FDNY and has been battalion commander for the past nine years. In addition, he is also a former New York City police officer and has served as a fire marshal, an arson investigator, a lieutenant, and a captain, receiving departmental awards and commendations for his bravery. Picciotto has humbly stated, “People call us heroes, but we were just doing our jobs.”
In addition to speaking at UNK, Chief Picciotto will meet with local firefighters and hold a press conference at the Kearney downtown Fire Station, located at 2211 Avenue A, at 6 p.m. prior to his presentation.
