Jill Vogel, a University of Nebraska at Kearney senior elementary education and early childhood education major from Norfolk, is the first recipient of the Grace Lundeen Frandsen Memorial Scholarship.
The family of Grace Lundeen Fandsen created a scholarship fund in her honor for future teachers at UNK. The scholarship is designed for an upperclassman enrolled in the College of Education who has been involved in church or community work.
The Frandsen family committed $10,000 to the endowment scholarship fund at UNK. To ensure that a $1,000 scholarship would be awarded this year, the family provided an additional gift.
“This scholarship was established to help young people realize their dream of being the kind of teacher who loves and inspires young children, who lives their faith and cherishes their family, all while serving their community,” said Frandsen’s daughter Gloria LeDroit of Kearney.
Marilyn Hadley, dean of the College of Education, said the scholarship will be of service to well-rounded students for years to come. “We are extremely grateful for this gift,” Hadley said. “The Grace Lundeen Frandsen Memorial Scholarship provided much-needed support for students who are preparing to become tomorrow’s teachers.”
Frandsen earned her teaching degree from the Nebraska State Teachers College (now UNK). Her first job was at the elementary school in Upland, Neb. She continued to substitute until age 70 and then tutored until she was almost
