The House of Bernarda Alba, with its all-female cast, kicks off the Department of Music & Performing Arts theatre season at the University of Nebraska at Kearney this week with 7:30 p.m. performances in the Fine Arts Recital Hall Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 7-10, and Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 14-16.
“The House of Bernarda Alba takes an intimate look into the home of the tyrannical matriarch Bernarda Alba and her grown daughters,” said Jack Garrison, director and UNK theatre professor.
“Obsessed with family honor and a fierce determination to maintain control, Bernarda stifles the hopes and passions of her five daughters with a stern resolution to impose eight years of mourning for her late husband,” he said. “Tensions build rapidly in the cloistered household as hatred, envy, passion and despair lead to tragic consequences and threaten to bring down the house of Bernarda Alba.”
Written by Federico Garcia Lorca and adapted by Emily Mann, the play features an 18-member, all-female cast. Of the 18, 13 are making their main stage debut.
