A Centennial Celebration lecture on Nebraska water issues will be given by J. Michael Jess on the Frank House front porch at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
Jess, a senior lecturer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will be speaking about the origins and resolution of the Republican River Compact dispute between Kansas and Nebraska.
Before joining the university, Jess was the director of Nebraska’s Department of Water Resources. In that capacity, he served as an administrative law judge and arbitrated hundreds of water rights disputes.
Jess is a registered professional engineer and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from UNL. The formulation and execution of Nebraska’s water laws and public policies which govern the use of water are the central themes of several undergraduate and graduate courses Jess has taught. Other fields of interest to him are the hydrology of Nebraska’s rivers and aquifer systems.
The lecture, sponsored by the UNK Centennial Committee, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
