University of Nebraska at Kearney Vice Chancellor for University Relations Curt Carlson has announced that he will retire at the end of the fall 2012 semester.
According to UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen, Carlson has been a valued colleague who has accomplished a great deal for the institution.
“Curt has accomplished a great deal, particularly in marketing and branding,” Chancellor Kristensen said. “Clearly, the UNK icon is a very visible reminder of his legacy.”
“I came to UNK and Kearney six-plus years ago, because I saw a gem of a university in a gem of a community,” Carlson said. “I announce my retirement with a great deal of satisfaction from contributing, if even in small part, to UNK’s advancement in reputation across the region and in student recruiting during this period. As I said upon my arrival, UNK’s town-gown relations are among the best anywhere, a fact that has added hugely to UNK’s successes.”
“Such announcements are always accompanied by mixed emotions,” Chancellor Kristensen said. “While UNK has benefitted from Curt’s steadfast loyalty and professional approach to marketing, we are excited for him as he makes plans for the next phase of his life.” Carlson will continue to serve as vice chancellor throughout the fall, at which time the position will be eliminated.
Chancellor Kristensen also noted that Carlson’s retirement presents a unique opportunity to restructure and enhance UNK’s future positioning. Presently, UNK will begin a search for a new position, director of Community Relations. The position will bear responsibility for institutional communication and for engaging external constituents across the region, state and nation.
“In addition, effective immediately, the Office of Creative Services and Printing will report to the Division of Business and Finance,” Chancellor Kristensen said.
