The University of Nebraska Kearney Department of Music and Performing Arts will presentPhantom Thursday-Saturday, April 14-16 and 21-23, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 17, at 2 p.m. in the Miriam Drake Theatre.
“Phantom will be a magical evening of theatre to celebrate the story of the Phantom of the Opera,” said Janice Fronczak, assistant professor of theatre. “This production is a different telling of the story of how the Phantom became the Phantom starting with his birth.”
Phantom is from the Tony Award winning creators of Nine, Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston. The bittersweet love story follows the story of a talented young soprano of the Paris Opera House, Christine, and the Phantom, who becomes both her mentor and protector and soon falls in love with her. When the Phantom’s devotion transforms into a dark obsession, Christine is torn between her loyalty to her maestro and the horror of what hides behind his mask.
“The production is a huge under-taking between the music and theatre departments consisting of five major elements: the script, music with a full orchestra and conductor, choreography, stage combat and a set that changes shape constantly,” Fronczak said.
An opening night reception, sponsored by the UNK Division of Academic Affairs and Students Life, will follow the Thursday, April 14, performance.
