The discovery of the winter quarters of the Stephen H. Long Expedition at a site just north of Omaha will be the focus of a presentation at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Nebraskan Student Union, Room 310.
Dr. Jeremy Dillon, UNK assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Geography and Earth Science, will give an overview of work completed by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, placing emphasis on the potential for future exploration. The site is the earliest documented Euro-American settlement in Nebraska. Journals kept by the expedition will be helpful in locating additional, older sites from the early 19th century.
Copious notes, pen-and-ink drawings and watercolors produced by expedition members provide valuable information about the pre-settlement natural environment, original descriptions of dozens of plant and animal species, ethnohistory and early U.S. Indian relations and trade.
Hosted by the UNK chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, the Stephen H. Long Expedition presentation is a continuation of the UNK Centennial Lecture Series. The presentation is free and open to the public.
