Lambda Theta Nu sorority at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is hosting a Worldwide Day of Play event for individuals of all ages in Kearney this Saturday (Sept. 24).
The Worldwide Day of Play is an initiative of Nickelodeon, which is hosting their event in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. According to information from the network, Nickelodeon is hosting an entire day of activities and games for kids and their families to encourage active and healthy lifestyles. Nickelodeon’s TV channels and websites will go off the air and off-line during the event.
In Kearney, Lambda Theta Nu is hosting a free cardio/kickboxing session at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Nebraska School of Martial Arts, 3811 Second Ave. in Kearney.
“The event is open to all ages, but we especially want to see children participate,” said Dayana Rodriguez, a UNK student from Grand Island and the community service director for the organization. No pre-registration is required for the Saturday event.
Along with the Worldwide Day of Play initiative, Lambda Theta Nu is also promoting an area Sneakers 2 Succeed campaign. The Sneakers 2 Succeed campaign is a yearlong campaign to collect gently used sneakers for children in need. The Sneakers 2 Succeed campaign was launched last summer by the Art of Stepping, a national organization.
“We will be promoting the Sneakers 2 Succeed campaign in which we ask people to donate new or gently used sneakers,” Rodriguez said. The shoes will be donated to the Orphan Grain Train charity in Grand Island.”
Sneakers can be brought to the Nebraska School of Martial Arts event on Saturday. In addition, there will be a collection box placed just outside the UNK Office of Multicultural Affairs, which is located on the first floor, southeast corner of the Nebraskan Student Union on the campus. The collection box will be available for donations throughout the fall semester.
