The exhibit opens July 1 and will remain up through Aug. 31 at the 1890s mansion, which is located on the University of Nebraska West Campus. In all, 11 quilts that have been donated to the Frank house will be on display on the first and second floors. The event is free and open to the public, although donations are accepted.
Among the quilts will be a child’s quilt, 41″ x 35″, and a 98″ x 87″ pieced quilt. The quilts range in age from 1856 to the early 20thcentury. Brian Whetstone, a Kearney High School sophomore, and Marya Shotkoski of Loup City, summer interns at the historic Frank House, curated the show.
“The oldest quilt is an appliquéd pattern called ‘Love Apple,’” said Sarah Jones, Frank House director. “It has red flowers on it and was signed with the initials of some of the makers and the date.
“Most of the quilts are cotton or wool, but the crazy quilt displayed on the bed in the master bedchamber features silk, velvet and embroidered details,” Jones said. “Other patterns include ‘hole in the barn door,’ pinwheel, square on square and bear’s claw.”
The Frank House is open from 2 – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. A Frank House tour guide will be available during the event to guide attendees through the house.
