Team members were recently selected for the 2011-2012 Spirit Squad at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The UNK Spirit Squad includes both the Sapphires Dance Team, which performs at home basketball and football games, and the UNK Cheer Squad, which cheers at home basketball, football and volleyball games. In addition, both teams make appearances at campus and community events, as requested. Members were selected through competitive tryouts, which were held on the UNK campus.
“The girls come to campus for a day,” said Heather Wolf, UNK Spirit Squad adviser and Student Activities coordinator. “In the morning, they go through interviews, and in the afternoon, they do physical tryouts. They perform a dance, learn a dance and perform skills.”
The interviews and tryouts are judged by Wolf, as well as UNK Cheer Squad Coach Lacy Mortinson and Sapphires Dance Team Coach Sarah Foulk.
