In three months, the newly founded social fraternity Phi Gamma Delta raised more than $2,500 for the American Red Cross and the Nebraska Special Olympics at the University of Nebraska at Kearney last year.
“All $2,500 raised stayed within the state of Nebraska,” said Scott Seeba of Bellevue, Phi Gamma Delta president. The money went to the American Red Cross Fort Kearney Chapter and the Nebraska Special Olympics.
The fraternity hosted the most successful blood drive at UNK last semester. The fraternity raised 113 units of blood.
“We had 135 donors and 38 of them were first-time donors,” said Blaine Drozd of Columbus, community service/philanthropy chair for Phi Gamma Delta.
In addition, Phi Gamma Delta had a FIJI island dance to raise funds. “We raised $251 for the American Red Cross and a half tote of food for the Salvation Army,” Drozd said.
This semester, the fraternity plans to participate in the Relay for Life campaign and the Cub Scout Olympics with the Boy Scouts of America, a first for the fraternity.
“We are excited to team up with an organization that teaches many of our principal values,” Drozd said. Local packs will represent a country, and compete in individual and team events that will ultimately teach the participants sportsmanship and teamwork. Drozd added that after the games, the fraternity members and the Cub Scout Olympics participants will attend a UNK Lopers baseball game.
