Graham crackers, frosting and holiday candy will come together to create prize-winning gingerbread houses in the Gingerbread House Contest at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Thursday, Dec. 2.
The contest will begin at 5 p.m. in the Ponderosa Room, which is located in the Nebraskan Student Union. Prizes will be awarded to the top three designs–$150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.
Gingerbread teams can consist of one to eight students, and the house must be built in the 30-minute allotted time. Graham crackers, frosting and spatulas will be provided, but students must bring their own food coloring, candy and other decorative items. All decorations on the house must be edible and no pre-assembled pieces will be allowed.
According to Heather Wolf, UNK student activities coordinator, past memorable designs include the White House, an igloo, the UNK bell tower and a lighthouse.
The gingerbread houses will be displayed after the contest in the Atrium of the Nebraskan Student Union until Wednesday, Dec. 8.
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Nebraskan Student Union Welcome Desk.
