Friends of the Frank House are once again offering the Christmas Walk in December, according to Bobbie McKenzie, a member of the Friends group.
The 19th century mansion and national historic site located on the University of Nebraska at Kearney West Campus has been decorated for the holidays and will be open for tours at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20; Saturdays, Dec. 9 and 16; and Sundays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17.
“Only one tour at 1:30 p.m. will be scheduled each of the days,” McKenzie said. “Trained docents will conduct the 30-40 minute tours.” A $3 tour fee is charged.
“The magnificent 1889 mansion has been decorated in Christmas finery,” she said.
Tours of 12 or more may be scheduled at other times with Bonnie Payne, UNK Events and Reservations coordinator, by calling 308.865.8469.
The mansion, which is built out of red Colorado sandstone, was designed by G.W. Frank’s son George Frank Jr. and built in 1889. The mansion was wired for electricity during construction. A 5’x10′ Tiffany stained-glass window is featured on the west side.
Originally, there were 10 fireplaces. Today, six of the original 10 remain, and the original kitchen has been restored.
Also among the highlights is a two-tier chandelier above the second landing. The chandelier was a memorial gift to the mansion by former curator Virgy Lund, given in memory of her late husband Dennis W. Lund, who was a UNK criminal justice professor from 1988 to 2000.
