Jessica Albin can testify to how important a study abroad experience is for students. The UNK English major from Lincoln studied in Ireland last year and is now a strong advocate for international experience.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney Honors Program will now be able to help even more students have a study abroad experience with the successful completion of a $20,000 fundraising effort.

A donor who has remained anonymous offered a $10,000 challenge gift last year to the UNK Honors Study Abroad Support Fund if other donors would first contribute $10,000 by May 1. Gifts of all amounts were made to meet the goal and deadline.

“We are thrilled by the way alumni and friends of the program responded to this challenge,” said John Falconer, the program’s director. “It shows we have a strong community that will help honors students thrive at UNK.”

Awards from the UNK Honors Study Abroad Support Fund will be used to help honors students with expenses related to their study-abroad program.

“We’re offering elite educational opportunities, and we believe it is important to help students take advantage of programs like study abroad,” Falconer said. “The support from donors will make it possible for more UNK students to live and learn in other countries.”

The Honors Program partnered with the University of Nebraska Foundation to help share news of the challenge gift with alumni and others who were interested in helping reach the goal.
