Songwriter Brad Colerick will present “Making Your Passion Become Your Career” at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Thursday, Oct. 26.
Colerick will begin his performance, which combines singing and speaking, at 3:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
The Valentine native has built his career on songwriting and creating music for commercials and movies. He has produced music for clients such as McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Sears, JCPenny, Budweiser, Nokia and HP.
Songs crafted by Colerick have been performed by artists such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, The Chi-Lites, Suzy Bogguss, David Lee Murphy, Livingston Taylor, Spencer Davis, Donell Jones and Johnny Cash.
“I actually had Johnny [Cash] call my father from the studio, because he was a huge fan,” Colerick said. “I don’t think any of his golfing buddies back in Nebraska believed it.”
Colerick is currently a partner at DeepMix, a music supervision and production company in Hollywood, and recently released a CD titled “Cottonwood,” which went to #10 on the Folk-DJ chart and #20 on the Euro-Americana chart.
While primarily recorded in Los Angeles, a few songs on “Cottonwood” were recorded in Nebraska. Colerick also said a drive across Nebraska inspired him to write the title track of the album.
“I was driving back home across I-80,” Colerick said. “It was flat, straight and long, but for me a truly magnificent drive. As I drove alongside the Platte River, I started to think about my roots and began to write the song that would eventually become the title cut.”
