“Military Families: Exploring Issues and Experiences of Children and Adolescents” will be the focus of the fourth annual Child Welfare Conference on Friday, April 6, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Keynote speaker for the conference, Louise Jacobs, is a licensed clinical social worker and a military family life consultant with the Joint Family Support Assistance Program in Hastings. Her presentation, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room, will be about what the Joint Family Support Assistance Program provides military families.
Nebraska has approximately 1,000 – 1,500 deployed military members each year. The conference will identify some of the resources available to military families.
At 10:15 a.m., there will be a panel of youth from The Nebraska National Teen Guard Council. The council is designed to develop leadership skills and enhance life for military children. A panel of military parents will then share their stories at 11 a.m. Closing remarks and evaluations will take place at 12:15 p.m.
Registration and networking will begin at 8 a.m. Friday. UNK students, faculty, field supervisors and Social Work Advisory Committee members may attend the conference at no charge. Non-UNK participants will pay a $40 registration fee, which will cover the 3.25 CEU credits.
The UNK Department of Social Work and the Phi Alpha honor society for social work students are sponsoring the event.
