KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Poker Walk encourages employees to be active, be outside and get to know campus.
“The Poker Walk is a way to get employees walking around campus, showing them they can be physically active right here on campus,” said Bryce Abbey, employee health and wellness director and assistant professor of exercise science.
“The route covers the entire campus, highlighting many of the great features of campus. We hope individuals and groups will take advantage of the many campus sidewalks for walking meetings, as walking meetings are a great way to be productive and get some fresh air at the same time.”
The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Aug. 7. Participants walk a two-mile route while picking up their poker cards.
Participants must visit eight stations located across campus. At each table, players pick up a card. Players can discard one card and receive another in its place. Prizes are given for the best poker hand.
“It encourages people to get out and visit the entire campus,” said Dee Ellingson, Professional Development Committee member. “Many of us come to work and stay in our area.”
The event is open to families, and participants can bring dogs on leashes. Last year, nearly 140 people participated in the poker walk.
Staff and faculty should register by Aug. 4 to be eligible for drawings. Participants can register the day of the event and be eligible to win prizes for the best hand of cards.
