“War, Peace and the Anatomy of Being Human,” a presentation that confronts and questions human rights issues, war ethics and justice, will take place Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Ken Carnes, a spoken word artist, military veteran and educator, will perform his one-man show beginning at 7 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Leadership UNK and funded by the UPFF.
Carnes uses poetry, prose and multiple character narratives involving both military personnel and civilians in his program to redefine the concept of social violence. While honoring the sacrifices of those who have given their lives in service, Carnes confronts and questions the key issues involved.
After his presentation, there will be a question-and-answer session to allow audience members to discuss the full range of issues presented in the program. Talks at other campuses have included sociological, judicial, philosophical and theatrical themes, illustrating that the discussions have not been limited to a single discipline.
Carnes, who studied at the American Conservatory Theatre, writes, produces and performs several solo-plays. In addition to receiving a master of arts in counseling and holistic studies, and running “The Healing Stage,” which offers workshops to under-served communities to use theater as healing tool, Carnes has also served 10 years in the military.
