Jackson Harvey has always been fascinated by how things work – especially the invisible forces that power our world.
That curiosity led him to the 2+2 engineering foundations program at UNK, where he’s laying the groundwork for a future in electrical engineering.
“My original interest in engineering stems from my enjoyment of math and physics,” said Harvey, a sophomore from Lincoln. “However, I chose the specialty of electrical engineering because I have a deep interest in how electricity and circuitry are used to distribute power into everyone’s lives.”
Through the 2+2 program, students like Harvey can begin their engineering education in a smaller, more close-knit environment and at a more affordable cost before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or another ABET-accredited institution.
“As a student, my favorite thing about UNK is how personalized my classes are. My professors know my name and care about how I am doing with the material. That helps you understand the fundamentals of engineering, so when you finish the last two years of the program at another university, you are set up for success,” said Harvey, who will complete his bachelor’s degree at UNL.
Although he’s a Lincoln native, starting at UNK was an easy decision – especially with encouragement from someone he admires most: his father, Doug, a 2000 UNK graduate with a degree in social science.
“My dad is my hero,” Harvey said. “When he told me that UNK is a great university, that was all I needed to hear.”
At UNK, Harvey found more than just strong academics. He’s built lasting friendships, grown as a leader and created a community through campus involvement.
Harvey served as a New Student Enrollment leader in summer 2024, and he’s a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He also participates in intramurals through Campus Recreation and enjoys studying in Discovery Hall and the recently renovated Calvin T. Ryan Library – two modern spaces that reflect UNK’s investment in STEM education.
This summer, Harvey will gain hands-on experience as a construction engineer intern with NorthWestern Energy – an opportunity he’s eager to take on.
“I’m very excited to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to the real world,” he said.
With a strong foundation from UNK and a passion for problem-solving, Harvey is wired for success.
“I am confident that the foundations program at UNK has prepared me to take the next steps in my career at UNL.”
