KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney Wind Ensemble will perform in Columbus and Grand Island during its upcoming spring tour.

A public concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 17 at the Columbus High School Concert Hall. The Columbus High Band will also perform at that event, which is free to attend.

The 45-member Wind Ensemble will perform earlier that day for students at Northwest High School in Grand Island. Because of the timing, that concert is not open to the public.

“Going on tour is a great way to provide outreach and an educational and fun way for the members of the band to work together in different ways,” said UNK music professor and Director of Bands Duane Bierman, who leads the Wind Ensemble.

“We are very excited to be able to perform at Grand Island Northwest and Columbus high schools. The band director at GINW is a UNK alumnus, and we have band members who graduated from Columbus. It will be a special treat to share the evening concert in Columbus with the CHS Band, and we will even get to play all together on one piece.”

Open to any UNK student, the Wind Ensemble is selected by competitive audition each year. The group performed at the Nebraska Music Educators Association annual conference in Lincoln last fall, and their next on-campus concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 1 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. The UNK Symphonic Band is also part of that performance.
