Dear Campus Community,
Recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Education reaffirms that race-based considerations in federally funded educational institutions are no longer permissible. As a public institution, we are committed to complying fully with these federal requirements while remaining steadfast in our mission to provide an exceptional, student-focused education.
To ensure alignment with this directive, we are conducting a thorough review of our policies, programs and practices. Failure to comply with these federal directives could impact our ability to receive federal funding, which is critical to supporting our students and institution.
This process will include:
- Ensuring admissions, scholarships, hiring and student support initiatives are race-neutral and fully compliant with federal law.
- Evaluating student organizations, campus events and programming to determine any necessary adjustments.
- Maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students while upholding our commitment to fairness and equal opportunity.
UNK remains dedicated to student success, academic excellence and access to higher education. While we make these necessary adjustments, our core mission remains unchanged: to foster an environment where all students can thrive, free from barriers or discrimination.
We recognize that this may prompt questions, and we encourage open conversations as we move forward. Additional updates will be provided.
Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that UNK remains a place where all students, faculty and staff are valued and supported.
Sincerely,
Charles Bicak
Interim Chancellor, University of Nebraska at Kearney
