Alex Straatmann, chief compliance officer at UNK, received the University of Nebraska Board of Regents KUDOS award during Friday’s meeting.
KUDOS awards recognize university staff for their professional expertise, service and “superior dedication” to UNK and the University of Nebraska. It is the university’s top staff award.
Straatmann’s time at UNK began as a student. He held multiple leadership positions on campus, including student body vice president, before graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
After completing law school at Texas Tech University, Straatmann worked for Congressman Adrian Smith for nearly 16 years. He returned to UNK in 2022 as chief compliance officer. In that role, he oversees compliance with Title IX and the Americans with Disabilities Act and manages the conflict of interest system.
Straatmann has built strong, trusting relationships across campus. He works closely with departments such as human resources, police and parking services and student affairs, as well as deans and directors. He values collaboration, prioritizing effective education and outreach and ensuring fairness in every aspect of his work. Straatmann embraces the servant leadership model, offering expert guidance to individuals throughout campus.
“Alex is a valuable resource for people across campus. I hear regularly from individuals who turn to him for guidance,” said John Falconer, senior advisor to the chancellor. “Alex is proactive in helping campus avoid challenges. He does this through outreach and by building strong relationships before issues arise.”
Leadership and community engagement are core values for Straatmann. He’s currently participating in the Leadership Nebraska program and he serves on Kearney City Council. Straatmann holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.
