KEARNEY – “One Big Day, One Big Thanks.”
That’s the motto for The Big Event.
Each year, hundreds of University of Nebraska at Kearney students come together to promote unity and support the community through volunteerism. They show their appreciation by serving at job sites throughout the Kearney area, whether they’re helping build a Habitat for Humanity house, assisting with yardwork and landscaping, painting, picking up trash or completing spring cleaning.
“The Big Event is the largest single-day service project at UNK,” said Renae Zimmer, director of student engagement. “This is our opportunity to thank the Kearney community by giving back to the people who support us.”
Organized by UNK Student Government, The Big Event is scheduled for April 20, with a 9 a.m. kickoff at Cope Stadium followed by projects throughout the morning.
Community members and organizations can host a job site by calling 308-865-8523 or emailing nsu@unk.edu by April 13. The job site request form is also available online at unk.edu/thebigevent. UNK students and organizations can sign up to volunteer on the same site.
Lopers have been participating in The Big Event since 2006, with nearly 600 students volunteering at around 80 worksites last year.
