Alpha Omicron Pi sorority sending holiday care packages to service members

UNK’s Alpha Omicron Pi sorority is bringing holiday cheer to U.S. military members serving overseas through its annual Sisters for Soldiers project.

For the seventh year, the sorority collected donations to send care packages to service men and women who will spend the holidays away from their families.

This year’s project raised nearly $5,000 and created 392 care packages that will be shipped this week. Each package includes items such as playing cards, puzzle books, DVDs, toiletries and snack foods.

About 400 campus and community members, including representatives from UNK Police and UNK’s ROTC program, gathered at the Alpha Omicron Pi house last week to prepare the care packages and create holiday cards that are also included in each box.

The UNK sorority, which has 95 members, also hosts an annual dodgeball tournament that raises money for the Arthritis Foundation.
