KEARNEY – Experience Chinese culture, sample delicious cuisine and celebrate the new year Saturday (Feb. 2) at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
UNK’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association is hosting the 12th annual Chinese Spring Festival in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, is a national holiday in China, where families get together to celebrate.
At UNK, the festivities will include numerous performances, including traditional Chinese dance, kung fu and music. There will also be prizes and food. The menu features dumplings, a classic Chinese New Year dish, as well as scrambled eggs with tomatoes, chicken and potato stew, sweet corn rice and egg rolls.
“The Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people around the world, and we want to share the happiness with everyone that day,” said UNK student Xuebo Wang, president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association. “This event is a great opportunity for people to learn about Chinese culture and enjoy the authentic food.”
Sixty students from China were enrolled at UNK during the fall semester, and the student association has 15 members.
