KEARNEY – University of Nebraska at Kearney Chancellor Doug Kristensen announced today that Marc Bauer will head the Loper Athletics Department as interim athletic director.
An NCAA Division II Hall of Fame coach, Bauer led UNK to three wrestling national championships (2008, 2012 and 2013) and five national runner-up finishes. He will begin working immediately with Paul Plinske as Plinske transitions to a new position at Colorado State-Pueblo, which he begins May 20.
Currently assistant coach following a successful 17-year stretch as UNK head wrestling coach, Bauer is a faculty member in kinesiology and sport sciences while pursuing a doctorate at Creighton University in interdisciplinary leadership.
A lifelong Kearney resident and UNK alumnus, Bauer has coached nearly 100 All-Americans and 22 national champions. A former elementary teacher, Bauer has operated numerous team and individual camps and coaches’ clinics, and provided award-winning leadership and mentorship to teachers, coaches and students.
“I look forward to working with Marc in this new role and to the positive impact he will make for our students, staff, program, campus and community,” Kristensen said. “Marc’s successful career in education and coaching, along with his academic preparation and strong interpersonal skills, have prepared him to provide effective leadership across all areas of the Athletic Director portfolio.”
The process for a national search for a permanent director of intercollegiate athletics will begin in fall 2018.
