Physics 210: Astronomy students at UNK recently hosted ASTRODAYS, a community outreach program developed by Assistant Professor Mariana Lazarova.
Sixty-six second graders from Kearney’s Park Elementary visited campus and participated in activities associated with various aspects of the universe, from lunar phases, the sun and total eclipses, to galaxies, dead stars and dark matter.
“As scientists, one of my passions is to share the fascination with the cosmos with the general public and inspire youth to pursue careers in STEM fields,” Lazarova said.
“The final project for that (PHYS 210) course is a collaborative effort to develop and offer astronomy hands-on outreach events, thus turning our students into teachers of what they have learned through the semester and adding a community service component to the course.”
