Grand Island Northwest wins top honors at UNK Band Day

Grand Island Northwest won the Sweepstakes Trophy and was named the top band overall at Saturday’s 2014 UNK Band Day Parade Competition.

Twenty-four Nebraska bands marched in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Homecoming Parade and were later awarded trophies.

Directed by Shawn Pfanstiel, Northwest won the Class A division and was also awarded the trophy for outstanding drum line.

Winning the Best Color Guard Trophy was Columbus High School.

Other first-place honors went to Kearney High School, Class AA; Valentine High School, Class B; St. Paul High School, Class C; and Axtell High School, Class D.

In the middle school division, first place went to the Kearney Eighth Grade Band.

Trophies for the event were donated by the Kearney Hub. Assisting with the awarding of the trophies was Hub Marketing Director Penny Parker, along with UNK band directors Duane Bierman and Brian Alber.

2nd – Amherst High School

3rd – Deshler High School

Middle School Division

1st – Kearney Eighth Grade Band

2nd – Ogallala Middle School

3rd – Holdrege Middle School
