High school vocal and instrumental music students from 115 Nebraska and Kansas schools will be participating in an Honor Band and Choral Clinic at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Monday, Jan. 28.

“The honor band and choral clinic is an opportunity for students from Nebraska and Kansas to learn better how to interpret a musical score in preparation for a concert,” said Dr. Jim Payne, UNK professor of music and performing arts.

At the end of the day, three choirs and two bands will present a 6 p.m. concert in the UNK Health and Sports Center. Admission to the concert is $3. There is no admission charge for participants, music directors and preschool children.

The musicians will rehearse during the day under the instruction of the clinicians, learning new ideas and methods of making music. Students will also participate in various workshops presented by UNK music faculty and guest clinicians.

The Honor Choir will be directed by Dr. David Bauer, professor of music and UNK director of choirs. The Honor and Festival Bands will be directed by Dr. Duane Bierman, assistant professor of music and UNK director of bands, and Dr. Brian Alber, interim assistant professor of music and UNK assistant director of bands.

The clinic will also include guest clinicians Cheri Helmer-Riensche, director of choirs at Papillion-LaVista South High School, and Adam Reimer, director of bands at Bellevue West High School.
