About one-half of the industrial distribution seniors at the University of Nebraska at Kearney have already secured positions, and by May, more than likely all of them will have, according to Scott Jochum, UNK industrial technology lecturer.
“They secured their positions either through internships with the same employer, or through the Career Events held last fall,” Jochum said. “We have a 98 to 99 percent placement rate. I would say 100 percent, but there are a few who decide to not go into the industry .”
Industrial distribution majors will be seeking career and internship opportunities at the UNK Industrial Distribution Career Event taking place Tuesday-Thursday, Feb. 14-16, on campus.
“It’s three days of events, focusing on internships and networking opportunities for all of our majors,” Jochum said. “It’s a really big event, and there will be Nebraska companies as well as companies from coast-to-coast. We do have about six to seven new companies coming, some of them are global leaders and a few are Nebraska companies.”
About 30-40 companies are expected to come from all over the United States, according to Kathy Benne, UNK industrial technology office associate.
“Almost all have (employ) one or two UNK alumni,” Benne said. “They play a huge part in the companies that are coming.”
The three-day event will begin with a Program Partner Reception at the Holiday Inn, 110 Second Ave., on Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Seniors and interns will have the opportunity to network with companies before the opening reception.
The opening reception will start at 7:30 p.m., also at the Holiday Inn. Students seeking full-time employment or summer internship positions will be able to visit with potential employers. There will be a short program at 8 p.m.
The Career Fair will take place Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. The first part of the fair will be for seniors seeking full-time positions and students seeking summer internships. Underclassmen will be able to join the fair at 10:30 a.m.
Company conducted interviews will begin at 2 p.m. at various locations on campus.
Network Night will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Big Apple Fun Center, 500 W 4th St.
“There will be a lot of networking for underclassmen, seniors and interns,” Jochum said. “It will be a lot of fun, but it will be business too.”
