WIND ENSEMBLE CONCERT SET FOR FRIDAY, FEB. 10, AT UNK

Dr. Duane Bierman
UNK director of bands, 308.865.8607

The University of Nebraska at Kearney Wind Ensemble will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
The performance, which will be directed by Dr. Duane Bierman, UNK director of bands and assistant professor of music and percussion, will include pieces such as “Pantomime” by Philip Sparke, “Cajun Folk Songs” by Frank Ticheli and “Fantasia in G Major” by J.S. Bach, among others. The concert is free and open to the public.

Dr. Seth Fletcher, UNK senior lecturer of music, will be a featured soloist playing the euphonium in “Pantomime.”

“Most of the pieces in this program are ‘band classics,’” Dr Bierman said. “They are compositions that are musically challenging and enlightening, and are well-known among fans and conductors of concert band music.

“I also chose these pieces to give good experience to those members of our band who will eventually become band directors,” Dr. Bierman said. “This program displays a wide variety of styles and character. There will be something for everyone.”

Individuals are chosen for the UNK Wind Ensemble through competitive auditions held at the beginning of the semester, and subsequently at the semester break if necessary.

“The ensemble is open to any UNK student,” Dr. Bierman said. “Members of this group represent many different majors.”

The ensemble will be going on a two-day tour of Nebraska on March 14 – 16.

“We will travel to several Nebraska schools and give concerts to promote our band program, and to recruit for UNK,” Dr. Bierman said.
